TREVOR PAGLEN
October 8 • 7 pm

Join photographer, writer, and self-described “experimental geographer” Trevor Paglen as he discusses his artistic philosophies and practice. Known for his deliberate blurring of lines between contemporary art, science and politics, Paglen’s diverse appeal has earned him accolades and attention from the art world and mainstream media alike. Five of his photographs are currently featured in the UMFA’s Desert Secrets: Photographs from the Permanent Collection exhibition.

EDGAR ARCENEAUX
November 5 • 7 pm
In 2008, the UMFA Young Benefactors voted to acquire Edgar Arceneaux’s large-scale drawing, Eyes Floating in the Abyss, for the UMFA’s permanent collection. Arceneaux’s popular mixed-media installations present a strange combination of rigid draftsmanship with rigorous conceptualism, often focusing on the role perception plays in our understanding of reality. Arceneaux will discuss his elaborate working methods and artistic ideas.

ARTHUR AMIOTTE
December 2 • 7 pm
Arthur Amiotte will discuss the persistence of belief and ritual in American Indian objects. Born on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, Amiotte is a scholar, educator, and a renowned American Indian artist. He holds four honorary doctorates, a Masters of Disciplinary Studies of Plains Religions and Art from the University of Montana-Missoula, and a Bachelor’s Degree from Northern State University. Amiotte will explore historic tribal art and contemporary American Indian objects, and explain how artworks similar to those in the Splendid Heritage exhibition are still made, used, and respected for their spiritual significance.
