This workshop is particularly useful for institutions looking to enhance their ability to respond to the immediate aftermath of a disaster. The workshop will be taught by expert conservators from the Midwest Art Conservation Center (MACC) with a "hands on" approach. The focus will be on post-disaster recovery strategies and salvage operations for various types of institutions including libraries, museums, visitor centers, and archival repositories.
Lecture and PowerPoint presentations will center on what to do in the immediate aftermath of a disaster including: a brief overview of disaster planning and the 48 hours immediately after an event, personal safety, salvage supply needs, setting up recovery teams, recording, insurance, FEMA, standing order contracts, etc. Discussions will be accompanied by practical exercises including a "large-scale" disaster scenario where participants will look at recovery procedures for water damaged artifacts based upon materials and material groupings. These will include: flat paper documents, books, photographic prints and negatives, electronic media, framed works, wooden artifacts (including furniture), metals, archaeological artifacts, natural specimens and artifacts (including fur, bone, biological specimens, taxidermy specimens, etc.), glass, low-fired and high-fired ceramics, leather, textiles, costumes, jewelry, and paintings.
Each participant will receive a comprehensive notebook containing relevant information and technical leaflets.
