UMFA 2016–17 REMODELING AND REINSTALLATION PROJECT
While Museum galleries remain temporarily closed for remodeling The Museum Café and The Museum Store are open. Creativity in Focus film screenings and ARTLandish programming continue in the Katherine W. and Ezekiel R. Dumke Jr. Auditorium.
UMFA galleries reopen to the public August 26, 2017.
UMFA educators—through pARTners, Museum in the Classroom, Traveling Museum Project, Art History Classroom Connections, and Teacher Professional Development Workshops—continue to bring hands-on arts education to K-12 students and teachers statewide.
Curators are finalizing new visions-including fresh storylines, layouts, and object checklists—for the European, American, regional, Asian, African, Oceanic, and modern and contemporary galleries.
Collections staff members are coordinating protection of our 20,000-object collection with the ongoing construction project while conserving and preparing objects for reinstallation. Class tours of the Museum's collection storage spaces are available on a limited basis and with advance notice.
Why is the Museum closed?
The UMFA is installing state-of-the-art vapor barrier technology in our award-winning Marcia and John Price Museum Building. This project will extend the lifespan of the building, which protects the nearly 20,000 art objects we steward for the University and the people of Utah.
While the Museum is closed, we're reimagining our permanent collection galleries in ways that will deepen your engagement with the world-class objects we collect and care for. While we regret the inconvenience, we look forward to welcoming you back for brand new experiences.
Why does the building need an upgrade?
The building's original insulating and vapor barrier systems allowed air loss that made it difficult and expensive to maintain the requisite humidity level. While the art was absolutely safe, over time the UMFA's award-winning building, an architecturally significant structure in its own right, could have been compromised. The state-of-the-art technology we're installing will protect the building that protects the artwork we collect and care for.
What is the UMFA staff doing during closure?
All full-time staff have remained employed throughout the closure, coordinating ongoing programming and planning new programs and exhibitions for 2017 and beyond. Collections staff remain at the Museum to continue monitoring and caring for the objects in our collection. Most other professional staff have relocated to temporary offices in Room 106 of the Film and Media Arts Building near the UMFA.
Will the building look different when the UMFA reopens?
While improvements to the vapor barrier will not be visible, many galleries will look and feel very different when we reopen, with new art on view in new gallery configurations, fresh wall colors, and refinished floors. You'll discover objects you haven't seen in a while-or ever-and encounter familiar and favorite artworks in more meaningful ways. Some of the reinstallation and reinterpretation work is supported by three prestigious grants recently awarded to the UMFA, from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Collectively this funding allows us to survey, document, and conserve objects in our European paintings and Asian metals collections, and to create new visitor-centered interpretive and educational materials for our European art collection.
