The Utah Museum of Fine Arts welcomes group visitors of all ages to explore its galleries and permanent collection. Tour group size is limited to sixty people. Guided tours must be booked at least two weeks in advance, four to twelve weeks in advance is recommended as we generally receive more requests for tours than we are able to accommodate.
To plan your group's visit, complete the online request form by clicking on PLAN-A-TOUR. Please provide three possible dates and times. The UMFA Highlights of the Collection tour lasts about thirty minutes and is offered the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 pm. This tour is free with admission, no pre-registration necessary. Highlights of the Collection tours are limited to twenty people.
pre-k and school-aged guided visits
- Docent-guided tours are available by appointment Tuesday–Friday at 10 am or 11:15 am.
- Tours must be scheduled two weeks in advance.
- Guided tours typically last one hour.
- Tours are focused on the age and interests of the group.
- Group leaders may request specific collections or themes.
- Self-guided tours can be scheduled according to Museum hours and availability.
- Tour groups are limited to 60 students.
- One responsible adult must accompany every ten students for 1st–12th grade, and one responsible adult must accompany every five students for pre-k and kindergarten groups.
- Admission is waived for charter and public schools. Private and parochial school group rates are $3 per person.
- Fee waivers may be available to groups demonstrating need.
- Transportation funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

adult guided group visits
Guided tours for adult groups are given during open hours Tuesday through Sunday by appointment. Tour group size is limited to sixty people. Tours usually last one hour and are directed toward the group's experience. Group leaders may request specific collections or themes. Group rates are $5.00 per person (through December 13, 2015). book club at the museum tours
Book Club at the Museum is an exciting program that unites art with literature. This program is designed for existing book clubs to read a featured book and then come as a group to the Museum to view art that relates to the book. An online Discussion Guide is offered for each featured book to facilitate conversation at the book club meetings and to enhance the Book Club tour at the Museum. Trained UMFA docents will guide discussion-based tours which last approximately one hour.
college and university group visits
The UMFA welcomes faculty and students from all higher learning institutions to work and teach directly from the objects in our collection. All students from a Utah college or university receive free admission with their student ID.

The UMFA Self Guides give unguided tours to the museum a chance to explore a few works of art in the museum in a fun and engaging way. Self Guides can be checked out free of charge at the Museum's Visitor Services Desk or dowloaded from our website.
sketching in the museum
The Museum welcomes classes and individuals who would like to sketch objects on display in the the galleries. Only dry media such as pencils, chalk, charcoal, and chalk pastels are allowed. Greasy media, as well as pens, markers, ink or paint is not allowed. A plastic drop cloth (trash bag) should be used to collect chalk powder and pencil shavings. Sketching stools are available for checkout at the Museum Visitor Services Desk. Groups of ten or more should make an advance reservation to avoid conflicts with other tours or special programs. family backpack program
The Family Backpack Program seeks to make traditional, adult-oriented galleries more accessible and fun for families. Each pack contains hands-on and viewing activities that focus on individual objects in the UMFA collection and the cultures they represent. Family Backpacks provide diverse and compelling materials and activities that are multi-sensory and more hands-on than traditional paper and pencil family guides. The packs are targeted for families with children ages 4–12 and are checked out free of charge at the Museum Visitor Services Desk.
