November 1, 2008 - January 11, 2009
After a long career working as an artist, William Utermohlen was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1995. The Later Works exhibition chronicles his paintings from his diagnosis in 1995 to 2000 when he lost the ability to create art. A collection of primarily self-portraits, these works provide a visual narrative of the artist's experience with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. The portraits express sadness, anger, anxiety and resignation, and are visually rich, intriguing, and haunting all at once.
This exhibition will allow the visitor to explore Utermohlen’s fascinating works and learn more about Alzheimer’s disease. Physicians predict that America is on the verge of an Alzheimer’s epidemic and crisis as the baby boomers approach age 65. The likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease doubles every 5 years after age 65. A station within The Later Works of William Utermohlen exhibition will include information about how Alzheimer’s disease affects the brain, the current research on the disease and community resources for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers.
This exhibition is sponsored by The Brain Institute, The Clinical Neurosciences Center, Intermountain LDS Hospital, and J. Robert Stewart in memory of Anne K. Stewart.
