Museums like the Utah Museum of Fine Arts develop their collections deliberately\, strategically\, and gradually over time. The UMFA’s extensive collection represents a remarkable range of global artistic expression that is unique in our region. The Museum is the only institution in the state that collects\, exhibits\, interprets\, and cares for artworks representing global cultures from the ancient to the contemporary.  \n\n\n\nIn this eight-session workshop you will find inspiration in the galleries and the collection with artist/educators Cat Palmer\, Jim McGee\, Laura Sharp Wilson and Sara Serratos. Originally from Philadelphia\, he earned a BFA in illustration before moving to Utah in 2002 to complete his MFA in painting at the University of Utah. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the United States and has received numerous awards\, as well as public and private commissions. As a teaching artist\, Jim is passionate about helping students discover their creativity through hands-on exploration\, skill building and personal expression. He believes art is for everyone and strives to create an encouraging\, engaging classroom where students feel inspired to experiment\, grow\, and enjoy the creative process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCat Palmer took a leap of faith and made Salt Lake City home at the age of 21. Born in Los Angeles and shaped by the vibrant music and poetry scene of Orange County\, California\, they found a creative community that continues to inspire their work.  \n\n\n\nToday\, Cat’s creative spirit thrives at The Bogue Foundry in downtown Salt Lake City\, where they’re often immersed in photography\, writing\, and new artistic projects. A true renaissance creative\, Cat writes the monthly Small Lake City column for City Weekly and makes regular appearances on ABC4’s Good Things Utah\, highlighting the people\, places\, and stories that make Utah unique. They are also entering their third year as Programming Director for the Utah Queer Film Festival\, curating powerful films and celebrating queer storytelling alongside a vibrant and growing community. \n\n\n\nWith nearly three decades behind the camera\, Cat is also available for professional headshots\, creating authentic portraits that help people look and feel like their best selves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSara Serratos is an interdisciplinary artist\, educator\, and curator from Hidalgo\, Mexico—on Ēxcān Tlahtōlōyān and Hñähñu territories—now based in Salt Lake City\, Utah\, on Timpanogos\, Shoshone\, Goshute\, and Ute lands. She migrated to Utah at the age of 26\, the same age her great-grandfather\, a locomotive operator\, was when he lost his life in a coal mine accident in what was once Rains\, Utah. \n\n\n\nHer practice explores landscape\, housing\, identity\, migration\, and systems of power. Working across photography\, video\, sculpture\, installation\, performance\, and fi lm\, she transforms everyday objects into reflections on surveillance\, preservation\, socio-environmental impact\, and ancestral nourishment. \n\n\n\nSerratos holds an MFA from the University of Utah (2023) and a BFA with honors from Escuela Nacional de Pintura\, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda” (2017) in Mexico City. Serratos is a recipient of the Utah Artist Fellowship in Visual Arts (2026) from the Utah Division of Arts and Museums\, was awarded the Assemblage Art Fund Grant (2025–2026) from the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and the Andy Warhol Foundation for her project Mexican Restaurants in Salt Lake County\, was an Artist-in-Residence at Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (2024–25)\, and she received the Apoyo para la Formación y Profesionalización en el Extranjero (FONCA/CONAHCYT\, 2021–23). Learn More \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGretchen Dietrich is the Marcia & John Price Executive Director of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts\, serving in the position since 2009. Dietrich began her career more than 35 years ago as a museum educator and has held positions at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford\, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston\, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. From 2015–2018. Dietrich served on the board of the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) and oversaw the AAMD’s Education & Community Issues Committee. Since 2019 she has served on the Board of Directors of the Art Bridges Foundation\, an organization dedicated to expanding access to American art across the country. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlisa McCusker\, PhD\, is Senior Curator and Curator of European and American Art at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. She is a specialist in Renaissance art and works on paper and has curated and co-curated numerous exhibitions on a range of topics\, including on medieval and early modern book illustration\, Japanese woodblock prints\, American Regionalism\, and contemporary art in the American West. Previously she served as Curator of European and American Art at the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri. She holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Arts in art history and museum studies from the joint program between Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Museum of Art. She received a Fulbright full-year fellowship to Germany for her dissertation research. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmily Lawhead\, PhD\, is curator of Modern and Contemporary art at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. She holds a BA in Comparative Cultural Studies from Northern Arizona University\, an MA in Museum Studies from the University of San Francisco\, and a PhD in the History of Art & Architecture from the University of Oregon. Her research explores intersections of art and technology\, with recent publications on topics including interactive digital art\, immersive exhibitions\, and the history of AI art. At the UMFA\, Emily spearheads the salt exhibition series\, site-specific commissions in the Great Hall\, and the Museum’s vibrant photography\, new media\, and modern and contemporary art collections. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLuke Kelly is the Associate Curator of Collections at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. In his 25th year at the museum\, he oversees the Asian and archaeological collections. Luke has curated small and large-scale shows from the Asian and Asian-American collections including the 2020 exhibition Beyond the Divide exploring Edo Period Japanese art and the 2024 installation Chiura Obata Layer by Layer celebrating the discoveries within the artist’s Horses screen. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHeader Image: Jack Hicks unpacks objects in the UMFA collection in 1975.

Her ongoing work continues to engage with these themes\, using the body\, earth\, time\, and motion to reveal our place in the universe. \n\n\n\nDive into the conversation and learn more about Land art from the 1970s to today! \n\n\n\nMeet the Artist\n\n\n\nLita Albuquerque\, photo courtesy of the artist.\n\n\n\nSince the early 1970s\, Lita Albuquerque (born 1946\, Santa Monica\, CA; raised in Carthage\, Tunisia and Paris\, France) has created an expansive body of work\, ranging from sculpture\, poetry\, painting and multi-media performance to ambitious site-specific ephemeral projects in remote locations around the globe. Often associated with the Light and Space and Land Art movements\, Albuquerque has developed a unique visual and conceptual vocabulary using the earth\, color\, the body\, motion and time to illuminate human consciousness and our position within the universe. She represented the United States at the Sixth International Cairo Biennale\, where she was awarded the Biennale’s top prize. DESCRIPTION:Ballerina\, Hollywood Star\, and Egyptologist\n\n\nAttend an Art Talk with artist Porfirio Gutiérrez at the Kimball Arts Center! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about Land Art Week\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Kimball Arts Center invites Land Art Week visitors to attend an Art Talk with Porfirio Gutiérrez. \n\n\n\nPorfirio Gutiérrez is a Zapotec American textile artist based in Ventura\, California. He uses traditional Zapotec technology of dyes and materials and redefines Zapotec weaving language to create works that communicates contemporary experiences and the complexity of the Americas today.  Gutiérrez’s expertise is based on a family legacy of treadle loom weaving and ancestral knowledge of his homeland\, its organic materials\, and their seasonal cycles that result in an unlimited palette of natural colors. He departs from traditional woven motifs in his compositions\, exploring the boundaries of his own creative expression and distinct experiences. Through his practice\, he asks us to rethink narrow definitions of contemporary art and Indigeneity. While in Zapotec there is no word for “artist” as an occupation\, there is a long held concept of valuing those who hold wisdom within their community. Gutiérrez’s interpretation of ancestral weaving techniques and motifs opens a new dialogue in the imposed dialectic of art versus craft\, which he sees as serving little purpose in furthering contemporary Indigenous creative expression. Breaking with that tradition is where he finds ultimate freedom as an artist.   An internationally known and exhibited artist\, Gutiérrez has taught materials and color at Harvard University\, and serves as Fellowships Advisory for the Smithsonian. His work is in the collection of LACMA\, Los Angeles County Museum\, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian\, and the Tucson Museum of Art. A selection of his dye materials was also documented and added to Harvard Art Museums’ Forbes Pigment Collection\, the world-renowned archive of artist materials. In 2015\, he received the Smithsonian Institution’s Artist in Leadership fellow\, in 2021 he received the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize\, and in 2023 he was the finalist for Frieze Art Prize. DESCRIPTION:Ballerina\, Hollywood Star\, and Egyptologist\n\n\nAttend an art-making workshop with Porfirio Gutiérrez at the Kimball Arts Center! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about Land Art Week\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Kimball Arts Center invites Land Art Week visitors to learn the art of Mark-Making  in a Cochineal Ink Workshop led by Porfirio Gutiérrez! \n\n\n\nPorfirio Gutiérrez is a Zapotec American textile artist based in Ventura\, California. He uses traditional Zapotec technology of dyes and materials and redefines Zapotec weaving language to create works that communicates contemporary experiences and the complexity of the Americas today.  \n\n\n\nMark-making is a fundamental artistic practice through which materials become gesture\, image\, and expression. In this workshop\, participants will collectively prepare a natural ink from cochineal before using it to create original compositions on textile. Together\, the group will explore how a single material can produce a range of colors through changes in chemistry\, concentration\, and application.  \n\n\n\nRather than focusing on traditional dyeing techniques\, the workshop investigates pigment as a contemporary artistic medium—one that carries memory\, material knowledge\, and history. DESCRIPTION:Insights Tour:\n\n\n\nFor the Future\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Required\n\n\n\n\nExperience the special exhibition For the Future: Collecting at the UMFA 2001-2026 through the eyes of Museum staff members. This 45-minute tour will provide insights into the works of art on view\, their unique histories\, and the ways the Museum stewards them. \n\n\n\nThis free Insights Tour will be led by Alisa McCusker\, senior curator at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts! \n\n\n\nAmerican art encompasses an extraordinary range of creative expression\, including Indigenous practices dating back thousands of years\, traditional modes of painting and sculpting of European origin\, as well as modern and contemporary forms engaged on the global stage. Learn More \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlisa McCusker\, PhD\, is Senior Curator and Curator of European and American Art at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. She is a specialist in Renaissance art and works on paper and has curated and co-curated numerous exhibitions on a range of topics\, including on medieval and early modern book illustration\, Japanese woodblock prints\, American Regionalism\, and contemporary art in the American West. Previously she served as Curator of European and American Art at the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri. She holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Arts in art history and museum studies from the joint program between Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Enjoy tasty treat\, vibe to beats provided by DJ Drew\, and mingle with artist Amor Muñoz! \n\n\n\nAmor Muñoz is a Mexico City-based artist who works at the intersections of technology\, craft\, labor\, and biology. In her expansive\, research-driven practice\, she traces how technology is deeply embedded in our material and cultural lives.  \n\n\n\nFor her salt exhibition\, Muñoz turns to corn (also known by the Nahuatl name elotl\, or elote in Spanish). Corn is more than a food: it is a carrier of memory\, a record of cultural exchange\, and a living system of knowledge that has been passed across generations. The exhibition features an immersive installation called KaleidescopElote. Using enlarged resin kernels as building blocks\, the central sculpture can be an observatory\, a lighthouse\, a seed bank\, or an oracle. With an interactive digital kaleidoscope of stars and seeds inside\, the work explores ancient relationships between agriculture\, architecture\, and celestial observation. \n\n\n\nBring a friend\, or make new ones at the UMFA! The guild is advised by Professor James Bobick and operates independently from the School of Music’s robust Opera Program. Recent projects include a concert performance in collaboration with the University Composers Collective and a FAF Grant-sponsored masterclass series with world-renowned opera singers\, conductors\, and directors.  \n\n\n\nThe University Composer’s Collective (UCC) is a student-run organization that is dedicated to creating more opportunities for performances and professional development for composers starting out their careers at the University of Utah. Advised by Dr. Jessica Rudman and Dr. Miguel Chuaqui\, the UCC has collaborated with other student organizations as well as professional performers. Recent collaborations include a Pierrot (+Percussion) Ensemble concert with new works\, and an evening of new opera scenes performed by Opera Contempo. The UCC has collaborated with the Student Opera Guild\, the University of Utah Crimson Harps\, and various student string quartets.
