Look no further than the Utah Museum of Fine Arts! Admission to the Museum is free every third Saturday of the month\, and there is always an art-making activity for the whole family. This extra special Third Saturday brings paper calaveras making\, performances\, film screenings\, and food trucks to the Museum!  \n\n\n\nThis October marks the one-year anniversary of the two new galleries celebrating art from México\, Central\, and South America at the UMFA. A three-year collaboration with Artes de México en Utah and the Transformación Cultural work group created these beautiful spaces that reflect the richness of living cultures\, identity\, and art.  \n\n\n\nFind inspiration in the Calaveras on view in the galleries and create one yourself out of paper! Calaveras are representations of human skulls and skeletons displayed during Day of the Dead celebrations. Insights Tours at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts provide you with the perspectives of those who know these works of art in unique ways! These lunch-hour tours are a perfect midday break\, and you can even stop by the Museum Café for a bite to eat! \n\n\n\nExplore the special exhibition For the Future: Collecting at the UMFA 2001-2026 through the eyes of Museum staff members. This 45-minute tour will provide insights into the works of art on view\, their unique histories\, and the ways the Museum stewards them. \n\n\n\nThis free tour will be led by Alisa McCusker\, senior curator at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts! \n\n\n\nAmerican art encompasses an extraordinary range of creative expression\, including Indigenous practices dating back thousands of years\, traditional modes of painting and sculpting of European origin\, as well as modern and contemporary forms engaged on the global stage. She is a specialist in Renaissance art and works on paper and has curated and co-curated numerous exhibitions on a range of topics\, including on medieval and early modern book illustration\, Japanese woodblock prints\, American Regionalism\, and contemporary art in the American West. Previously she served as Curator of European and American Art at the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri. She holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Arts in art history and museum studies from the joint program between Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Enjoy pozol by Zoque Mexican Chocolate\, vibe to beats provided by DJ Drew\, and mingle with artist Amor Muñoz! \n\n\n\nAmor Muñoz is a Mexico City-based artist who works at the intersections of technology\, craft\, labor\, and biology. In her expansive\, research-driven practice\, she traces how technology is deeply embedded in our material and cultural lives.  \n\n\n\nFor her salt exhibition\, Muñoz turns to corn (also known by the Nahuatl name elotl\, or elote in Spanish). Corn is more than a food: it is a carrier of memory\, a record of cultural exchange\, and a living system of knowledge that has been passed across generations. The exhibition features an immersive installation called KaleidescopElote. Using enlarged resin kernels as building blocks\, the central sculpture can be an observatory\, a lighthouse\, a seed bank\, or an oracle. With an interactive digital kaleidoscope of stars and seeds inside\, the work explores ancient relationships between agriculture\, architecture\, and celestial observation. \n\n\n\nBring a friend\, or make new ones at the UMFA! Advised by Dr. Jessica Rudman and Dr. Miguel Chuaqui\, the UCC has collaborated with other student organizations as well as professional performers. Recent collaborations include a Pierrot (+Percussion) Ensemble concert with new works\, and an evening of new opera scenes performed by Opera Contempo. The UCC has collaborated with the Student Opera Guild\, the University of Utah Crimson Harps\, and various student string quartets. In addition to these performance opportunities\, the UCC also hosts workshops on how to write for various instruments\, most recently the harp and the organ.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDawn Marie Wells is a soprano studying vocal performance and music theory at the University of Utah with Professor Julie Wright-Costa. She has played the Mother in Hansel and Gretel\, and looks forward to playing Madam Flora in The Medium. She loves composing and hopes to eventually write an opera. \n\n\n\nDonna Gibbons is an accomplished Utah-based composer\, keyboardist\, and vocalist with a multi-decade career spanning progressive rock\, pop\, and New Age/Epic music. She has backed KANSAS\, toured with Frank Zappa alumnus Ike Willis\, and directed at the School of Rock for 14 years. Under Resonance Artistry\, she continues to compose boundary-pushing music and is excited to showcase one of her latest pieces at the Sight and Sound Exhibition. \n\n\n\nMonica Mendoza is a composer and flutist from Salinas CA. Monica is working on her PhD in Composition at the University of Utah and is the winner of the 2025-26 Steve Roens Prize for composition. Her work has been featured at Electronic Music Midwest and SEAMUS. \n\n\n\nSadie Olsen is a composer who writes for classical voice with a focus on opera. Sadie is currently getting her undergraduate degree in music composition from the University of Utah. Her work focuses on themes of gender\, sexuality\, and love. Sadie often arranges her own text from older literary works. \n\n\n\nScott Bigler is a composer and pianist who has studied at the University of Utah. Always of a more sensitive temperament\, Scott finds refuge in music as a space where he can express his innermost feelings to the world. He aspires to be a film and media composer. \n\n\n\nUtah-based composer Caleb Martin is best known for his vocal writing\, from barbershop to art song to pop. A devoted student of the styles he adores\, he writes music dense with delicious detail. He is currently writing a series on Utah’s myths\, from pioneer seagull miracles to Uinta Basin UFOs. \n\n\n\nNelson LeDuc earned his Bachelor of Music in Composition in May of this year and is grateful to be included in this program. He was deeply moved by the joy expressed by the women in this photograph\, particularly in light of the dangers they must have faced during this time. \n\n\n\nMeet the Performers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Student Opera Guild at the University of Utah is a student-led organization that provides learning and performing opportunities for aspiring opera singers at the School of Music. The guild is advised by Professor James Bobick and operates independently from the School of Music’s robust Opera Program. Recent projects include a concert performance in collaboration with the University Composers Collective and a FAF Grant-sponsored masterclass series with world-renowned opera singers\, conductors\, and directors.  \n\n\n\n\nThe pianist for the evening will be Dr. Carol Anderson. \n\n\n\nEmelia Hartford is a Senior BA in Music. She originally hails from Seattle. Most recently\, she was in The Tenderland and covered the Dew Fairy in Hansel and Gretel at the University of Utah. This year she is covering Frasquita in Carmen and singing Mrs. Gobineau in The Medium. \n\n\n\nMezzo-soprano and DMA student Mandi Barrus focuses on partnering with composers and artists of all disciplines to make new works come to life. She has premiered the roles of Artemis in Jessica Rudman’s Protectress and Nature in Anthony Buck’s Le Roman de Silence\, and looks forward to premiering the role of Nana in Lisa Neher’s The Velveteen Rabbit this Christmas. \n\n\n\nNahal Falahatimarvast is a lyric coloratura soprano\, studying under renowned mezzo-soprano Kirstin Chávez. She has appeared in several productions with UOpera\, including Amahl and the Night Visitors\, Die Fledermaus\, and La Bohème. Her recent role with Uopera was “Sandman” in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel\, and her future role will be “Frasquita” in Bizet’s Carmen in December 2026. \n\n\n\nSarah Mair is known for her emotional depth and her love of new music. Sarah is currently pursuing her Master of Music in Voice Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Utah\, where she continues to pursue her passion for new music and performance. \n\n\n\nKaylee Smith is a soprano from North Salt Lake who lives for drama and connection when it comes to performing. She is pursuing her master’s in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Utah. She received her Bachelor of Music from Snow College. She previously performed the role of Madame Herz in Mozart’s “Der Schauspieldirektor” and Papagena in “Die Zauberflöte.” \n\n\n\nDorian Dillon is a 4th-year Vocal Performance and Trombone Performance major at the University of Utah. She has a deep love for the world of Art\, performing Opera\, Musical Theater\, and symphonic works\, and has a background in ballet and ballroom dancing. This year\, she looks forward to performing as Morales in Bizet’s Carmen with the University of Utah. \n\n\n\nAeryn Cousineau is a junior in the vocal performance program at the University of Utah. This year\, she will cover the role of Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte and the soprano in the jazz trio in Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti. She is excited for the opportunity to debut this piece by Nelson LeDuc. \n\n\n\nAnneli Abbott is a freshman mezzo from Houston\, who participated in the All-State competitions through her sophomore year. She then moved to Utah where she won 1st place in several competitions\, including UVO Future of Opera\, NATS\, Sterling Scholar\, and Schmidt. She is a Professional Member of the American Institute for Conservation and a member of the Western Association of Art Conservators. \n\n\n\nBefore joining the UMFA\, Kelly worked at the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art\, and cultural institutions in Scotland and England. She has conserved works by artists including Mary Cassatt\, John James Audubon\, William Henry Jackson\, and Charles Russell\, as well as illuminated manuscripts and significant historical documents. \n\n\n\n\nHow does an artwork make its way from storage to the gallery? I’ll share stories from installing this exhibition and some of the surprising challenges that come with getting art ready for display. Look no further than the Utah Museum of Fine Arts! Admission to the Museum is free every third Saturday of the month\, and there is always an art-making activity for the whole family. This Third Saturday you’ll illustrate landscapes inspired by the words of Barry Lopez!  \n\n\n\nA new exhibition at the UMFA\, From Here to the Horizon: Photographs in Honor of Barry Lopez\, showcases photographs inspired by words about the land that were compiled by writer Barry Lopez. Explore the photographs on view\, then choose a word at random from Lopez’s book to illustrate in the classroom.  \n\n\n\nFrom Here to the Horizon is a call and response between words and images—each photograph is paired with a phrase from Home Ground: A Guide to the American Landscape\, the “reader’s dictionary” of geographic terms compiled by Lopez and his spouse Debra Gwartney. Standing as markers of admiration and affection for Lopez’s legacy\, the images are like cairns guiding visitors through the landscape\, finding elegance\, inspiration\, and solace in the places we call home. DESCRIPTION:Third Saturday for families:\n\n\n\nCopper Foil Sculptures\n\n\n\nCreate art inspired by Stone on Boundary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLooking for a free family activity in Salt Lake City? Look no further than the Utah Museum of Fine Arts! Admission to the Museum is free every third Saturday of the month\, and there is always an art-making activity for the whole family. This Third Saturday you’ll mold copper foil and wire to make a small sculpture inspired by Stone on Boundary. \n\n\n\nThe breathtaking sculpture in the G. W. Anderson Family Great Hall is a landscape of copper\, wire\, and undulating forms. Artist\, Onishi Yasuaki created the monumental installation out of 5\,000 copper foils that are molded from river rocks in Osaka\, Japan and Salt Lake City\, Utah. The installation reflects Utah’s vast and varied landscape – from river stones in deep canyons to the towering peaks of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountains and the dynamic red rock formations in southern parts of the state.  \n\n\n\nExplore Stone on Boundary from all angles—from below in the Great Hall\, from above on the second floor\, and surrounded by it on the platform of the Grand Staircase.
