Creative Aging: Nuestro Pasado es Presente/Our Past is Present

In October of 2025, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts unveiled two new galleries celebrating art from México, Central, and South America. This three-year collaboration with Artes de México en Utah and the Transformación Cultural work group resulted in a space that reflects the richness of living cultures, identity, and art.
In this eight-session workshop you will find inspiration in these galleries to create ceramic objects, pinatas, and papel picado with artist/educators Hazel Rodriguez Coppola and Clara Amezcua. This workshop is for all skill levels.
All materials provided. This workshop is free for anyone 55+, registration is required. We know things come up, but please plan carefully so we can keep this programming free! Please do not reserve a ticket if you cannot attend. The UMFA is offering multiple Creative Aging workshops this spring. Please only sign up for one.
Registration priority for this workshop will be given those who have never attended a UMFA Creative Aging Workshop.

Meet the Artists:
Hazel Rodriguez Coppola is a Guatemalan American ceramic artist and educator living and working in Summit County, Utah. Hazel’s work reflects her innate desire to remember, tell, and preserve stories. Ceramicists often say that “clay has memory;” a concept that greatly influences her exploration and use of the medium. She is captivated by the materiality of clay, and the expressive potential of its movements as they relate to visually telling its own story and retaining its history.
Hazel received her BFA in Ceramics from the University of Utah.
Clar Amezcua was born in Mexico City and grew up in Toluca. She obtained her degree in Accounting and Business Administration, and worked as a sous-chef for ten years before turning to piñata making.
Clar’s foray into the art of piñatas happened when she moved to Salt Lake City with her husband and two children. She wanted to show her children that despite the distance they could keep their traditions alive, one of which was Las Piñatas. Mexican Piñatas are a symbol of identity that carry a profound historical and cultural significance. Clar began by finding a piñata she liked and making it for her child’s birthday. She developed a passion for how colors and different fun shapes could be used in creating a piñata. She fell in love with the art form.
Clar studied and practiced different technigues and designs for almost two years, improving her skill unil she could create traditional piñatas, but also custom-made shapes and characters.
Artes de México en Utah has invited Clar to various arts festivals where she not only displays here art but teaches mini piñata-making workshops. her goal is for the community to learn about beautiful Mexican culture and traditions through piñata making.

En octubre de 2025, el Museo de Bellas Artes de Utah inauguró dos nuevas galerías dedicadas al arte de México, América Central y América del Sur. Esta colaboración de tres años con Artes de México en Utah y el grupo de trabajo Transformación Cultural tuvo como resultado un espacio que refleja la riqueza de las culturas vivas, la identidad y el arte.
En este taller de 8 sesiones, buscarás inspiración en estas galerías para crear objetos de cerámica, piñatas y papel picado con las artistas y educadoras Hazel Rodríguez Coppola y Clara Amezcua.
Se proporcionan todos los materiales. Este taller es gratuito para personas mayores de 55 años. Es necesario inscribirse. Sabemos que pueden surgir imprevistos, pero te pedimos planear con compromiso para que podamos mantener este programa gratuito. Por favor, no reserves un lugar si no puedes asistir. Conoce a las artistas:
Hazel Rodríguez Coppola es una ceramista y educadora guatemalteca-estadounidense que vive y trabaja en el condado de Summit, Utah. La obra de Hazel refleja su deseo innato de recordar, contar y preservar historias. Los ceramistas suelen decir que “la arcilla tiene memoria”, un concepto que influye enormemente en su exploración y uso de este medio. Le fascina la materialidad de la arcilla y el potencial expresivo de sus movimientos, ya que se relacionan con la narración visual de su propia historia y la conservación de su pasado.
Hazel obtuvo su licenciatura en Bellas Artes con énfasis en cerámica en la Universidad de Utah.
Clar Amezcua nació en Ciudad de México y creció en Toluca. Obtuvo su diploma en Contabilidad y Administración de Empresas, y trabajó como subchef durante diez años antes de dedicarse a la elaboración de piñatas.
La incursión de Clar en el arte de las piñatas coincidió con su mudanza a Salt Lake City con su esposo y sus dos hijos. Quería demostrarles a sus hijos que, a pesar de la distancia, podían mantener vivas sus tradiciones, una de las cuales eran las piñatas. Las piñatas mexicanas son un símbolo de identidad que encierran un profundo significado histórico y cultural. Clar comenzó buscando una piñata que le gustara y luego decidió hacerla ella misma para el cumpleaños de su hijo. Le apasionó la forma en que se podían utilizar los colores y las diferentes formas creativas para crear una piñata. Se enamoró de esta forma de arte.
Clar estudió y practicó diferentes técnicas y diseños durante casi dos años, perfeccionando su talento hasta poder crear no solo piñatas tradicionales, sino también formas y personajes personalizados.
Artes de México en Utah ha invitado a Clar a diversos festivales de arte, donde no solo expone su obra, sino que también enseña en talleres cortos de elaboración de piñatas.
