Third Saturday for families:
Tell Your Story in Art
Looking for a free family activity in Salt Lake City? Look no further than the Utah Museum of Fine Arts! Admission to the Museum is free every third Saturday of the month, and there is always an art-making activity for the whole family. This Third Saturday is extra special, as it is also the opening day for the new traveling exhibition Storywork: The Prints of Marie Watt from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family!
Find inspiration in Watt’s print practice and her monumental blanket stacks, hanging textiles, and small-scale sculptures, all of which bring her stories to life. As a member of the Seneca Nation with German-Scots ancestry, artist Marie Watt is a self-described “half cowboy and half Indian” who weaves together ideas of kinship, community, stewardship, tradition, and memory through her practice of “storywork.” She draws from Native and non-Native traditions—Greco-Roman myth, pop music and Pop art, Indigenous oral narratives, Star Wars and Star Trek—to remind us of our stories, obligations to the world, and relationships with past and future generations. As a Klamath elder once told the artist: “My story changes when I know your story.”
Embrace the practice of “storywork” and create your own art inspired by your personal story.
