Conversation Areas
When you need to recharge (yourself or your devices), take a break in our new conversation areas where you can discover even more about the art around you. Basecamp, Trailhead, and Lookout encourage interactive learning, providing unique opportunities to interact with artworks and discuss your experience with family and fellow visitors. Learn more about each area below.
Base Camp
Base Camp is designed specifically for families to rest and learn more about our African and Pacific art: discover pattern and texture, bring viewfinders into the galleries to interact with the art up close, and try your hand at playing West African music. The space has plenty of seating to gather your group to share an enriching Museum experience.
Basecamp was made possible with support from the Joan B. and John H. Firmage Family.
Lookout
Lookout is geared toward teens and adults with books, articles, and videos about the art on view in the nearby global contemporary art gallery. Use the interactive iPads to search the UMFA collection online and to share your thoughts. Or, just sit back, plug in, and enjoy the view!
Lookout was made possible with support from the Meldrum Foundation.
Trailhead
Trailhead is your starting point to discover Utah’s great Land art. Learn more about Robert Smithson’s iconic Spiral Jettyand Nancy Holt’s spectacular Sun Tunnels. Dig into a book as you enjoy a coffee from the Museum Café. If you decide to take the journey to visit these great earthworks, pick up our guides to help you plan your journey.
