North American Art

Legends and Landscapes

North American history is filled with stories of migration, adaptation, and innovation told from a variety of perspectives. These four galleries trace stories—historical and legendary—through time and place, from the early 19th century to the late 20th century, and from East to West as settlers expanded their influence. The predominance of landscapes conveys the significance of land and nature in American history. Its sublime beauty and power—as well as its potential—captivated generations of people. This selection of art also reflects the diversity of vibrant cultures across North America. These works represent major artistic centers from Indigenous communities of the West to early settler cities of Philadelphia, New York, and Salt Lake City. Each of these works conveys the ingenuity of artists who mastered a range of materials and techniques.
