Pre-Lesson:

Color!

Hello!

We are so excited to welcome you to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) on a field trip! During your visit, we are going to explore a world of art in fun and inspiring ways!

To prepare, please complete the following creativity warm-up:

Yoruba artist(s), present-day Nigeria, Benin, and Togo, Crown, 20th century, basketry framework, textile, and beads. Gift of Owen D. Mort, Jr. for the Owen F. Mort, Jr. Collection of African Art, UMFA2008.32.31

Color!

(10–20 minute activity)

For this activity you will need:

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Crayons or markers
Six vertical panels in muted tones, each with a pattern of four outlined hexagons stacked vertically. The hexagons are drawn with thin colored lines that contrast with each panels background color.
Anna Campbell Bliss, Cornrow – Varied Edition, 1982, screen print on paper, UMFA2025.6.33

Let’s look at this painting Centennial by Ilya Bolotowsky.

Which colors do you see first?

Can you find the three primary colors: red, blue, and yellow?
Did you know that these colors can be mixed together to create all other colors?

How many colors are there in this painting? Count them!

What colors are repeated or used many times in this artwork?

Great job looking at color in art!

Abstract painting of intersecting rectangles and lines in shades of gray, beige, blue, brown, yellow, white, and red, creating a geometric, grid-like pattern with overlapping shapes and varying color blocks.
Ilya Bolotowsky, Centennial, 1949, oil on canvas, UMFA2026.1.1

Creative Challenge!

On your paper, draw a GIANT shape that takes up almost your entire paper.
Next, draw a different shape inside of your giant shape. Make it BIG!
Now, draw a different shape inside the other two shapes.

Color each shape a different color: one shape a primary color, the other your favorite color, and the last, a color you would see in nature.

Share your amazing artwork with your neighbor!

We can’t wait to see you soon on your field trip at the UMFA, where we will learn more about color in art!

¡Hola!
