Docent Recognition 2018

Brunch | 10 am | FREE and open to UMFA Art Lovers only | UMFA G. W. Anderson Family Great Hall
Lecture | 11 am | Free and open to the public | Katherine W. and Ezekiel R. Dumke Jr. Auditorium

UMFA Lovers will savor a delicious brunch followed by a fascinating public lecture by renowned historian Martha A. Sandweiss, professor of history at Princeton University. In “Discovering History through a Photograph: One Picture, Eight People, and the Unexpected Stories of American Life,” Sandweiss will examine a single photograph made by Alexander Gardner during the Ft. Laramie Treaty negotiations of 1868. A picture may show us what’s in the frame, but it also leads us to unexpected places. As the photo’s subjects walk into the picture frame and then walk away, they carry with them an astonishing set of stories that extends well beyond Indian Country to encompass all of the drama of nineteenth-century life in the United States. This lecture is part of the programming for our 2019 marquee exhibition, The Race to Promontory: the Transcontinental Railroad and the American West. Special thanks to The Hal R. and Naoma J. Tate Foundation, Exhibition/Lecture Sponsors for The Race to Promontory: the Transcontinental Railroad and the American West and Stephanie and Tim Harpst, Art Lovers Reception Sponsors.
