Professional Development

fourn women sit at a long table in the UMFA classroom the are working on an embroidery art project. One women with her back to the camera is pulling a thread with her hand help above her head.

Come excited to learn with fellow teachers and leave with fresh ideas and inspiration—we all learn better by learning together.

UMFA educators and guest instructors provide tools and strategies for integrating art and cultural objects into all classroom learning.

Our professional development events are interactive, hands-on, and art-making intensive. These networking opportunities include open houses, Evening for Educators, and curriculum-based workshops. Relicensure points are available at most events.

This 2023-2024 School Year:

Evening for Educators: Symbols of Family

October 25, 2023 | 5:00pm - 8:00pm

Explore the UMFA's collections and special exhibition Tatau: Marks of Polynesia to dive deeper into understanding the varied symbols of family. Families come in many forms and can be biological and/or chosen. Understand students better by understanding their situations and how they thrive in a family, while making your classroom its own sort of family.

This evening will include community members sharing their personal connections to Tatau: Marks of Polynesia before participants spend time finding their own art connections. We'll finish the night with a special hands-on activity led by Esmeralda Torres, introducing us to the wonderful world of cacao and her heritage from Chiapas, México.
