Museum+Library Collaboration
A composite of three images, two vintage images of the Marriott Library facade sandwiching an image of a lift in the UMFA

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the J. Willard Marriott Library embarked on a journey of intentional collaboration in 2018 that continues to unfold today. Energized by "Landscape, Land Art, and the American West," an award from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and matching funds from the University of Utah, the Museum and Library’s ongoing collaboration seeks to improve access to and enhance the value of their collections for scholars and creatives at the University of Utah, throughout the region, and around the world. Discover how this collaboration has gone beyond the scope of the grant’s initial focus on the American West to revolutionize how the Museum and Library work together.

Howard Stansbury (American, 1806-1863), "An Expedition to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah." Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1852. First Trade edition with reproduced lithographic illustrations and suite of maps. John Hudson (American), "West Side of Stansbury Island Taken from Camping Ground of 21 June/50," pencil on paper autographed letter signed and addressed to, "My dear family," January 5, 1849.
Library+Museum Collections Search Tool
Enhancing Collections Discovery

This Library+Museum Collections Search tool enables users to search both the UMFA’s and Marriott’s collections simultaneously, empowering researchers to make critical connections between the institutions that would otherwise remain opaque. Launched in 2021, the project was developed through the generous support of an Andrew W. Mellon grant.
