UMFA in the Wild

UMFA in the Wild is a program that aims to show how art and nature are intertwined. In the past, we met people in wild places around Utah to experience creating art with inspiration from nature. During this time of social isolation, we hope that you will still find inspiration in nature to create art as an individual or with your family.

Nightscape painting of two trees with a full moon in the sky between them.
Nightscapes

Artwork of the land is called a landscape, and when it is shown at night it is sometimes called a nightscape. Look at art depicting the night and then make your own masterpiece.

A landscape of a lake with a dock in the foreground. Low bushes are on the left foreground and tall trees on the right middle ground. Tall mountains are in the background with a small island in the middle of the lake. In the sky is a large full moon and the moon is reflected in the lake. Clouds surround the moon. The whole painting is cast in a bluish light showing that it is almost nighttime.
Moon Viewing and Sketching

Learn about the Asian tradition of Moon Viewing and be inspired by art depicting the moon.

Mary H. Teasdel Untitled, (Seascape), c. 1883-1937 Watercolor Gift of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Collection of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts UMFA1994.033.002
Water and Watercolor Landscapes

Be inspired by landscapes out your front door and consider how water made them through inspiration from the Think Water Utah exhibitions.

Edgar Alwin Payne, American Red Mesa, Monument Valley, Utah, c. 1940s Oil Painting Purchased with funds from The Phullis Cannon Wattis Endowment Fund and Diane and Sam Stewart UMFA2008.14.1
Cloudscapes

Try your hand at sketching clouds! Artwork of the land is called a landscape, and clouds are part of the landscape but in the sky – a cloudscape.
