Fold, cut and stitch with Hawaiian quilting artist Moanike’ala Revoir and Craft Lake City in celebration of Handstitched Worlds: The Cartography of Quiltson display at the UMFA. Inspired by Hawaii’s diverse botanical landscape, Moani will share her expertise in traditional Hawaiian applique quilting. Similar to creating snowflakes, this technique begins with paper and a little inspiration from nature. Craft Lake City will introduce an English paper piecing method for you to try out. Inspired by the bee, Utah’s state insect, you can begin your own hexagon quilt.

All skill levels are welcome, beginners and experts alike. Join us for an evening of community conversation, creativity, and stitching.

Moani Revoir

Born in Honolulu and raised in Kaneohe on the island of Oahu, Moanikeala Revoir first learned to quilt as a teenager from a neighbor who taught her and later by completing projects her mother started. Since then, she has become a well-known Hawaiian quilting expert who has taught at quilt guilds, conferences, and other venues across the United States. Moani made many patchwork quilts before realizing that she loves Hawaiian applique quilts, which she has dedicated the last 25 years to designing and making; she also loves teaching people how to design and get started on their own Hawaiian quilt projects. A graduate of Brigham Young University’s Family and Consumer Sciences program, she is a former president of the Utah Valley Quilt Guild and a past board member of the Utah Quilt Guild. The UMFA is honored to exhibit her Bird of Paradise Hawaiian Quilt, a traditional whole cloth quilt on loan from the Utah State Folk Arts Collection.
